The GBR is situated in the coral sea off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia. It is so special and amazing because it is the worlds largest reef system. It contains over 2,900 individual reefs and 940 islands. It can even be seen from outer space.
It is on the list of world Heritage sites, and is one of the 7 Natural wonders of the world.
It contains a diverse range of natural sea life such as whales, dolhins, sea turtles, seas snakes, crocodiles ( in mangrove areas close to reefs) thousands of species of fish incldunig famous clown fish, coral fish, snapper, trout, and most importantly numerous species of coral. It is the deeply rich coloured coral mixed with crystal clear blue water that makes the reef so magical.
For tourists:
Tourists can go on daily tours of the reef either scuba diving or snorkelling. Daily boat trips are avaliable from many sites, e.g Whitsundays, Cairns and cities off the Queenslad coast. The most popular modes of viewing the reef is on glass floored boats, underwater observatories and helicopter rides.
